Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia

Walking in Kota Kinabalu City, it is difficult to escape from the heat and humidity. My walk is characterised by rushing from one shaded area to another, along the way I don't meet many other walkers, it's just too hot. I'm sweating, I stop for a drink then take a detour through an air conditioned shopping centre to escape from the sun.

Like most cities, Kota Kinabalu has its own magic but it is not a beautiful city and in places it is barely serviceable. There are large holes in walkways where paving slabs have disappeared, protruding wires and cables and remnants of half finished buildings, I watch out for these things whilst I'm walking. These features hide amongst the familiar elements of a modern city: shopping centres, high rises, car parks and roads.
