Over the last week Association have been busy sending out a series of invites to various people in Manchester, to encourage them to respond to our current practice. We hope that these invites will stimulate new conversations and potentially encourage future collaborations. We are not asking for anything in particular in response - and we accept that some people will choose not to respond. All the responses we do receive, however will be documented and archived during our time at Castlefield Gallery.

In the meanwhile, invites are finding their way to various corners of the city. We have sought out certain artists who have specifically shown an interest in working with us, but also covertly deposited invitations in places, to be discovered by whoever happens to pass by. Envelopes have been slid under doors, text messages have been sent, directions have been given and objects have been deposited. We await the responses with great anticipation!

Association were invited to take part in a presentation of work at Ducan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee with Dundee based artist collectives Now Now and Ganghut. The presentation was organised by DJCAD as an 'exchange of ideas event' with the potential of developing a collaborative project in the future.

Association have been invited by Castlefield Gallery to take part in their Summerhouse project. We will be occupying the gallery between 13-23 September 2010, to undertake the following project:

Throughout the summer Association will send out a series of invitations to artists in Manchester, inviting them to respond. Each invite will be a carefully considered gesture which references our previous activity, but is devised to encourage a response from particular groups of artists. The response we request is non-prescriptive and may take the form of a piece of work, conversation, a further question, or in some instances, nothing at all. The direction of our activity in the gallery is reliant on the intervention of others. We intend to arrive at Castlefield Gallery armed with the many or few responses we receive and embark on a fortnight of activity; digesting, collating and responding to our replies.

We will be posting further information about the progress of the project over the next few weeks.

We were visited several times during our residency at Islington Mill by Wang Jun, the current Artist in Residence at the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester. He made a particular contribution to our 3rd Open Studio, where we invited the public to take part in a live drawing event. Shortly after this open studio, Wang Jun invited us to respond to his Scholar's Rock project. Wang Jun invited several local artists, including Lee Machell, Antony Clarkson, Naomi Lethbridge, Sean Caherty, Gweni (Emma Williams), David Hancock, Philip Davenport, Nicola Smith and Tony Trehy, to exhibit their response to his project, along side his work, during his Open Studio in April. Association presented some work that has originated from a series of walks in the areas of Salford surrounding our studio at Islington Mill. We make particular reference to Ying and Nina’s regular pilgrimage to The Graceful Rock, a boulder in a local piece of wasteland with a particularly classic form.

I’d been working singularly in my studio for a long time and had got to the stage where I wanted companionship and critical dialogue to be part of my studio life, so first and foremost I collaborated for the shared experience and the sense of possibility.

For our penultimate open studio we invited the public to take part in a live drawing event. Between 4 and 6pm Nina and Ying went on a series of walks to the areas of wasteland, that surround the studio. Every time they returned to the studio they brought with them an object collected during the walk and added it to the still life that Ying had set up earlier in the studio. As our visitors arrived, they were asked to select paper and drawing materials and to join Sarah and myself in drawing the gradually accumulating still life. During the progress of the open studio many drawings were completed and exhibited throughout the studio.

During this event I took the opportunity to try out an idea that I had recently been considering. I interspersed various instructions amongst the table of materials that we had provided for our guests. These instructions came from the previous open studio, where we left guidance to our fellow Association members to encourage them to preserve certain aspects of the studio during the clean-up process. I wanted to see whether these instructions affected the decisions our visitors made.

Studio Sickness/I Hate Pink

I've been feeling the need to be out of the studio recently, which is why I've been spending a lot more time on the blog. It's the halfway stage of the residency and it feels like things are starting to stall.

I'm reading around the issue of collaboration. I've posted some links on the blog of what has cropped up along the way.

This project has, so far, been punctuated by moments of intense stress; where individually we are all butting against this idea of collaboration. Whether it is the feeling of responsibility towards the group and necessity to perform under pressure, which occurred in the first week; or the desire to seize control, quickly accompanied by the fear of loosing it. Amongst these issues, the question which runs through this whole process, is why. Why are we doing this, why do we feel the need to collaborate.

Considering this project further, I am trying to see how it sits within my own practice to date. It appears to be a logical progression from the last exhibition I was involved in, IV at the Rogue Project Space in Manchester. IV, although not considered at the time to be an exercise in collaboration, was where four artists (Tom Baskeyfield, Julie Del'Hopital, Sarah Sanders and myself) together agreed on four rules with which to make work by. The result was four pieces of work, one by each artist. The most dynamic and contentious of the four devised rules was: No. 1, We will not discuss the work; this one statement, immediately destroying any potential for future collaboration. After reaching a consensus of opinion and common goal, the artists divided company to individually re-assert control over their own work. At the time of conception this rule was not intended as a display of arrogance by our selves, in the form of a refusal to communicate with the audience, but rather a process where the artist relinquished control over the work once it was in the public domain, consequently allowing the audience to form their own opinion.

An ongoing project of mine is Objects for a Studio. Here I spend a single day making work in another artist's studio. I have done this with ten artists in Manchester, ten in Amersfoort (The Netherlands) and will be taking the project to Chongqing (China) in November. In Objects for a Studio, I arrive at each studio armed with only a camera (or other means of documentation) and the intention to create work within another artist’s space, using only the objects I encounter there. Despite the communication between myself and the host artist and the presence of myself in their studio, surrounded by their work - I have absolutely, at no stage, considered this a collaboration. This project explores the psychological space of the studio, and its ability to both protect and restrict the artist's creative process. By placing myself in the highly personal domain of this other artist and giving myself the strict time frame of a single day, I hope to provoke the extremes of emotion that the studio creates. It is not. therefore, a conversation between myself and the host artist's work.

Referring back to this current residency; it is this highly charged atmosphere which has started to fascinate me with regards to Association. Four artists all working in the same studio; at once tip-toeing round and trampling over the work around them. Every day another issue crops up; another conflict arises and I wonder whether our friendship can stand this process. Issues of control, authorship, leadership, restriction of free will and professionalism are not necessarily subjects that tend to crop up between friends - or are not topics we constantly wrestle with.

So - so far, my answer to the question why, is that I am interested in how my work will respond to this tense social situation. But as a psychological experiment, are these the right people to work with?

Having completed my role in the Deconstructed Drawing at the start of week 1, I can start to think about the future of the project:

From the brief discussions that we have just had, about possible future experiments to do during this residency - I realise that the idea of collaborating is actually quite terrifying. I am starting to dread the potential work that lies ahead and can't shake an overwhelming feeling that I will be giving something up. Relinquishing or reducing control over the work is an important, yet challenging part of the collaborative process - however it is not something I feel fully prepared for at the moment. I am adamant that this process will not be an exercise in compromise, but I am not sure at this stage how to achieve this.

Deconstructed Drawing

We propose a drawing created in and for a gallery. Each section of the process is to be undertaken by a different artist. For this project we have broken the act of drawing down into four stages: Conception, Choice of Materials, Action or Technique and Execution. In the following proposal I will describe in brief each artist’s practice and outline their individual role in this proposed drawing.

Stage 1: Conception
Artist: Jessica Longmore

Jessica Longmore’s practice involves a series of appropriate gestures; instinctive responses to the psychology of particular spaces. Her work draws on both her own and the viewer’s haptic senses to relentlessly question the forces which ground us and orientate us within a space. Jessica often applies a rigid framework to her studio practice, imposing strict time limits or placing herself within tense, highly charged, environments, such as other artist’s studios.

Jessica will provide a set of conceptual constraints to inform the subsequent stages of the drawing. This framework will consider the architectural features and possible restrictions imposed by the gallery and provide a direction for the drawing. Once conceived, these guidelines will be handed over to Ying Kwok to begin stage 2.

Stage 2: Choice of Materials
Artist: Ying Kwok

Ying Kwok likes to work on a flat surface area, which is a platform for her to make marks. She particularly enjoys the process of starting with nothing and working towards completion. By using monotone painting materials coupled with simple repetitious hand movements she fills a blank space with images, stroke by stroke. Ying believes that communication with the viewer is very important, so sometimes will select the painting material by considering the texture of picking up an everyday object or carrying out a daily experience.

On receiving the conceptual guidelines for the project, Ying will then select the material which is to be used for the drawing and deliver it to Nina Chua.

Stage 3: Technique or Action
Artist: Nina Chua

The boundaries of Nina Chua’s practice are always changing and the work can take many forms including sculpture, video, drawing and live art. The work often starts with a commitment to perform a simple action. This might happen intensively over a period of hours or intermittently over days or months. It is a meditative process that leads to the creation of new work.

Nina comments that “In this particular project my role is ‘action’ - however, my task is to direct the action and not to perform it. This sets up an intriguing construct for me to consider, the power to direct but impotent to act.”

Stage 4: Execution
Artist: Sarah Sanders

I am the executioner. I see myself in the act of execution as a submissive part within a network of cogs, inside a mechanical object.

Sarah Sanders will arrive at the gallery at an agreed time, armed with a conceptual framework supplied by Jessica Longmore, material from Ying Kwok and having been instructed on the technique she should use, by Nina Chua. Sarah will then create the drawing, interpreting for herself the guidance she has been given by the 3 other collaborating artists. Alongside the drawing that Sarah creates, we will exhibit a representation of the 3 preceding stages.

Association was formed by Nina Chua, Ying Kwok, Jessica Longmore and Sarah Sanders to explore the potential of collaboration through a series of experiments.

For the first experiment the process of drawing will be broken down into four stages: Conception, Material, Action and Execution. Each stage will be undertaken by one of the four artists. The first artist will provide a set of conceptual constraints. These guidelines will be handed over to the second artist who will select the material. The third artist will instruct the action and finally, the fourth artist will execute the work.

Before the summer and before we all departed for various, disparate projects and locations, we, as Mutually Advantageous Association set several texts as suggested summer reading. To this list curator and artist, Sophia Hao, added Marina Abramovic's Seven Easy Pieces, alongside a note to consider the ways in which live art and ephemeral works can be documented. At the time this exercise seemed on a tangent from other considerations and points we had discussed but, we were newly formed and looking for ways to move forward and so we accepted the task.

Now, as I review work we've posted on the blog and think about the challenges we face in our individual practices and in collaboration with each other, I realise we keep asking ourselves the same question: How to document a live work? How to document an action or a gesture? How to represent a sculpture or a space? And perhaps the most crucial question with regard to this project is how to best document the process of collaboration?

Chinese Arts Centre

Present: Jess, Nina, Sarah, Ying

Achievements

Statement - agreed on 2 short statements of intent. One or both will be used on the blog, Jess will test this out.

Vault Gallery - agreed on idea for proposal. Each MAA member will play a different role in the process of creating a drawing. Jess will write a proposal. All members to forward a statement to Jess by Wednesday.

Blog - will be made private for the short term. The blog will be our main communication tool. All members agree that use of email will be confined to matters regarding dates, names or private information only.

Future meetings - will be on the first Monday of every month.

Minutes - we will use flip chart paper and marker pens to minute future meetings, a photograph of which will be posted on the blog.

Presentation of Work

Jess - showed a number of photographic images taken during her residency at Rogue Studios

Nina - showed a collection of photographic images taken during the summer in Malaysia

Future Projects

Venues for short term use - each member will approach a venue or propose a space for MAA to work in for a period of time. Possible spaces are: Whitworth lecture hall (Sarah will make contact) and Islington Mill (Ying will follow up on previous enquires).
